"Paradise Inn"
"Authors Note" This wonderful old national park lodge built high on the slopes of Mount Rainier, Mount Rainier National Park, Washington. was recently closed for a couple of years undergoing a massive 35-million dollar rebuild and restoration
Its been a few years since my last visit to the Paradise Inn, and I have not visited the historic lodge since its restoration. I did do some checking around before this writing to find out what I could about the restoration.
It seems that no stone was left unturned (literally) the massive ninety foot tall stone fireplaces were painstakingly disassembled, each stone was numbered and cataloged then completely rebuilt to their original stature.
The whole building was gutted so the foundation could be replaced. A section of the ground floor was converted into ADA Accessible Guest Rooms, then the whole structural integrity of the lodge was repaired, upgraded and restored. A massive new additional building was constructed on the site to accommodate visitor and guests.
After 90-years of withstanding Mt. Rainier's record snowfalls ( snow fall is measured by the foot, not by the inch on Mt. Rainier ) the majestic old Lodge needed a little tinder loving care. I truly look forward to visiting the lodge again someday soon.
Opened in 1917, the wonderfully rustic Paradise Inn resides high on the slopes of Mt. Rainier with gorgeous views of the summit, Paradise Valley, and the distant Tatoosh Mountain Range.
This two-and-a-half to three-story building was constructed from local stone and dead standing Cedar timber weathered decades before use. Built in the classic post and beam style with a steep sloped multiple-gabled roof to help shed against record snowfalls.
The lobby and dining room are certainly the most memorable spaces in the lodge. The expanse of interior exposed beams and floral painted posts along with many unique handcrafted furnishings add true character to the building. Multiple massive fireplaces speak loudly of a grand era long past when remarkable building like this were built in some of the most beautiful, wild and remote places in this nation.
This national park lodge has a historic past as one of the oldest ski-resorts, and high-mountain lodges in the country. In 1934-35 the lodge was used to house Olympic Competitors.
Many notable guests and dignitaries have visited over the years. President Harry Truman, the crown Prince of Norway, Sonja Henie, Tyrone Power, Cecil B. DeMille, and Shirley Temple just to name a few.
If you are looking for breathtaking high mountain scenery and love historic park lodges. This is one you definitely want to add to your short list.
