"Lake McDonald Lodge"
Is stationed on the eastern shore of beautiful Lake McDonald deep in the heart of Glacier National Park, Montana.
Once known as the Lewis Glacier Hotel the Lake McDonald Lodge is a prime example of the Swiss Chalet style mountain lodges early park pioneers strove to create. Now almost one-hundred years later. This historic lodge is probably one of the finest examples of a Swiss Chalet style hotel left in America.
Opened in 1914, this three-and-a-half-story historic national park lodge offers lakeside vistas of beautiful Lake McDonald the largest lake in Glacier National Park. The views from the lakeside veranda are stunning. You will not find a more picturesque alpine setting anywhere in North America.
Built primarily from stone, logs and heavy timber framing with multiple chipped gable roofs. The exterior consists of stucco on the lower levels and painted wood-clapboard siding on the upper levels.
Though similar in style the Lake McDonald Lodge its self is not nearly as mammoth in size as its two park sisters the Glacier Park Lodge and the Many Glacier Hotel. This offers a more cozy interior feel that allows you to relax after a day of enjoying many of the areas attractions.
The rustic lobby is memorable for its floors that are crafted to resemble flagstone inscribed with Native Blackfoot, Chippewa, and Cree Indian phrases that when translated say meaningful slogans like welcome, big feast, and looking towards the mountain among others.
Rustic balconies overlook the main lobby and its many big game trophies and Native American decorations. The area is further accented by large cedar posts that rise all three-stories up to the ceiling to support even larger logs and an exposed roof structure.
The dining room continues with the rustic big game lodge look and feel with exposed logs and beams throughout. Impressive artifacts and trophies decorate the room and large picture windows allow guests to view the scenic alpine surroundings while dining.
The service is good and the local favorites are wonderful. Montana micro-brews and a selection of wines are available.
The comfortable lounge offers a stocked bar, snacks, and the only television available in the main lodge. Large windows allow for beautiful vistas of pristine Lake McDonald as you relax. The Lake McDonald Lodge serves as the hub for several adjacent facilities.
There is a two-story Lake McDonald Motor Inn and a series of large and small cottage duplexes within easy walking distance of the main lodge along with a grill-pizzeria, general store, and a gift shop that offers a large selection of hand crafted jewelry, pottery and art work by both Native American and local Montana Craftsmen.
This national park lodge is a wonderful spot to start your scenic drive or Historic Red Bus tour of "The Going-to-the-Sun Road" ( one of the most stunning scenic mountain drives in North America. ) There are a variety of other unique mountain tours and lake cruises available from this destination.
